The Ultimate Novel Outline Template
Outlining a novel is the process of creating a structural plan or blueprint for the story before writing begins. It involves documenting key elements of the narrative, such as the plot, characters, setting, and themes, to organize thoughts and provide a clear roadmap for the writing journey.
It is said that there are two different types of writers. Plotters: writers who outline every detail, scene, and event in their novel. That way when they write, all they have to do is fill in the blanks. Then there are Pantsers: writers who write by the seat of their pants, which means they open a document and start writing without any previous planning. If you were to ask me, why thanks, I consider myself both. I outline, but I leave many sections open to figure out as I’m writing. This works for me, but it may not work for you!
Regardless of what you prefer, I’ve learned that writing is easiest when you have something to start with. That’s why this template will allow you to describe what happens in each section, adding as little or much detail as you please. Outlining each section will allow you to have a soft outline of your book by the time you’re finished. That way, when you get to the writing, you aren’t starting from scratch. Also, having a soft outline allows you to catch plot holes before they even form. And as I always like to point out, this outline can always be changed. As you write, add, take away, and change the details of this outline. Nothing is ever set into stone, even after you publish your book. That’s why “editions” exist!
So get excited! This is where you connect your characters with your world and you begin to see your story taking shape!
